Mart Laidmets will be the new Secretary General

The Government of Estonia approved the proposal of the Minister of Education and Research Mailis Reps to appoint current member of the board of Foundation Innove and former Deputy Secretary General of the Ministry Mart Laidmets to the position of Secretary General.

The Government of Estonia approved the proposal of the Minister of Education and Research Mailis Reps to appoint current member of the board of Foundation Innove and former Deputy Secretary General of the Ministry Mart Laidmets to the position of Secretary General.

According to the minister Mailis Reps, Laidmets has thorough knowledge of ministry’s area of governance as well the organization itself. „Mart Laidmets has been the head of higher education department as well deputy secretary general responsible for general education, vocational education, adult education, youth affairs, school network and teaching profession. In Innove he has been curating national curricula and educational innovation. He is experienced in leading all levels of education and his personal characteristics enable him to be great leader,” said minister Reps.

Ministry of Education and Research bears great responsibility to shape society where people are constantly ready to learn, said Mart Laidmets. “Ministry has ambitious goals to achieve and high expectations from societal partners. Those can be achieved and met only when we act as one team in ministry,” added Laidmets.

In addition to working in the Ministry of Education and Research and Foundation Innove, Laidmets has been working for the Universities Estonia and University of Tartu. He has been researcher at the Uppsala University, advisor to the Chancellery of the Riigikogu and aide to the prime minister of Estonia. Laidmets has a degree in history from the University of Tartu.

Secretary General is appointed for five years.
